For one more life I write with feather - let's voice keep ringing in the ether. The Maker gave a Blade of Fire to fight in souls and in wire, To sing a Message to mankind and help become them man of mind. Let courage, honor, joy and truth awaken souls, who are sooth, So with the Hope in divine Light they'll purify the world of blight. The mix of times is on threshold, and pure spirits, who are bold, Will have a chance for wisdom's feast, and learn that death does not exist. Common or Garden Dharma. Essays on Contemporary Buddhism, Volume 1
The emergence of e-books has created new opportunities for academic authors. Like many academics, there are a number of shorter works that I have published over the years for which I never signed away the electronic publishing rights - mostly because they didn't exist at the time!
Some of these started out as academic articles and have needed to be rewritten extensively to appeal to a broader audience. Others were always written in a more popular style, but were tucked away in newsletters that were not archived effectively, or appeared in now-defunct websites. A few were published in books that went out of print years ago.
I am making a few of these available as a free e-book on Smashwords. It does not include articles that can easily be found online, even if they are stuck behind a paywall. If you would like to see a volume 2 in this series, drop me a note: my email addresses are listed at the back of the book.
These essays have served their purpose: they appeared where they needed to appear, they were read by the people whom I needed to read them. They brought me to where I am today. So why dredge them up and rework them for a new audience?
Academics are funny creatures: most of us are used to working for below-average salaries, and we can labor on for years with no realistic hope of tenure. The one thing academics can't stand is being ignored, having no-one read their work. So, is this a vanity project? Why, yes, of course it is. I am a Buddhist. I never said I was a good one. This is an attempt to get my thoughts onto the perpetual backlist of e-books, my pathetic little shot at immortality. Thank you for participating!
The essays that follow are not arranged from oldest to newest. They don't pretend to form any sort of coherent whole. Each essay stands on its own. Each one expressed my opinion at the time: I may have changed my mind since then, but you will have to wait for my new publications to find out. And here and there I have sneaked in something that doesn't deal with Buddhism at all, but which I still think is worth sharing.

This is a famous but very controversial piece by Bertrand Russell. It was a lecture delivered in 1927 at National Secular Society, London. Later in 1957 it was part of a book with the same title and reached international fame. He examines one by one several highly regarded arguments for the existence of God. His main point however is the possibility of morality based on another principle than God. It is quite a challenging reading and one we must all face, regardless of our belief or lack of it, thereof. Enjoy!

Richard Dawkins The God Delusion: A Theist Response
In this interesting piece; the author argues that Richard Dawkins has failed in his attempts to put a good rational argument for atheism.
The professor uses the rather feeble approach of setting up straw men only to dismantle them with great relish. These repeated mischaracterizations of faith do the atheist camp no favours. All it does is betray a vitriolic personal agenda.
It is argued that The God delusion has helped to perpetuate two major modern myths. First that religion and science contradict each other and second that Theists are unthinking drones. If Aristotle, Augustine, Plotinus, Aquinas, Descartes, Kant, Einstein, Collins and thousands of other genius's are unthinking drones -this would make Richard Dawkins intelligence amoeba like.
A rational case for Theism is proposed.

Developing a Universal Religion: Why one is Needed and How it might be Derived
Does humanity need a Universal Religion?
This book summarises the difficulties in solving this question.
It explores how we think, why “purpose” is important when solving practical and moral problems, how religions arose and developed and how the universe and life evolved. Then it discusses how humanity might select a “purpose” and suggests how a “universal religion” might be built.

Totality Beliefs and the Religious Imagination
There is a widespread notion that belief is a good thing, but in this book the author argues that freeing oneself from all belief systems can bring a huge sense of relief. He illustrates this by describing his own experience of a Roman Catholic upbringing followed by eleven years' experience of Transcendental Meditation, before arriving at a position of metaphysical naturalism.

How to be a Wizard: How life is magical, and we are too
This short book is not focused on the trappings of wizardry, fun though these may be, nor is it a guide to gaining power over anyone but oneself. It is not about 'pointy hats', though Gandalf's looks very good on him.
Instead, it outlines the foundational thoughts of the True West , and in the 'Emerald Tablet' section lists the 'Wizard's Desiderata' - the kind of life which is truly powerful, truly magical, truly mythical, and truly possible. It always has been possible to be a 'wizard' of one's life, though never perhaps with as little danger of being burned at the stake.
'How to be a Wizard' is the fruit of a very long journey by one misfit christian turned process philosopher turned 'wizard' and fantasy epic writer, who ended up building a magical or at least idealistic and romantic place called Cafe Eutopia in a little town in New Zealand, besides many other adventures of the mind and spirit. I offer it in the hope that it will spark a burning desire to truly be the wizard of your own life, and then of your community, and ultimately, no matter how imperceptibly perhaps, to help the whole world.
I value the true tradition of the West, to which I belong. Yes, I know it has gone horribly wrong in so many ways that many think it is doomed. But I believe that its problems can all be solved by a return to the 'True' West - the ideals of Love, Beauty, Truth and Freedom which have inspired its best, and kept some check on its worst. Also a return to seeing the world as organism, not a soulless machine, as has been the dominant model since Descartes.
My vision is that more and more 'Wizards of the True West' will arise in answer to the challenge of the times, and like Gandalf will help to turn the tide. But we desperately need not only the goodwill, the desire to see good things happen, but also the philosophical foundations on which to build. These have been undermined by many enemies, most of them the very ones we look to to hold them fast and keep them strong - our philosophers, in particular, and academics in general. Relativism, 'postmodernism' and nihilism, not to mention PC nonsense of many shades, have been actively promoted by many of them, so that now these ideas have become the norm, and what I write in this book may seem incredible to you at first. So, read it as an interesting fantasy, and if it seems like a pleasant alternative to the 'real' world of our postmodern, materialistic madness, try some of it out. You may be surprised to find that it actually works, actually rings true. Then - spread the word!

The Book is on Sikh Philosophy and Principles of fearlessness without animosity is an expression of profound understanding of the author in the form of academic literature expounding on Gurmat precepts. Through majority of essays in this book the author Madan Singh has concluded that it is difficult to deny in the present times those who call themselves Sikhs have gone astray from the Highway of Guru’s Wisdom, and this is a matter of great concern.
In this book the majority of essays represent a dynamic, intellectual and conscious pricking analysis of anti- Sikh thoughts that concern those who call themselves Sikhs unfortunately have gone astray under ignorance. The author has suggested appropriate new directions where ever required. Overall he has not only tried to keep the unity of Panth intact also provided symbolic means of removing the obstacles that hinder the unity.
This way the book represents a deep scrutiny of the present reality and the prevalent worrisome degradation provides a ray of hope for a bright future.
This edition is a milestone in authors contribution among younger generation whoa have difficulty in reading the Gurmukhi script.

This is part 9 of a 10 books suite. This one is about how to birth the life reality. I will explore different possibilities for that, I will put the emphasis to do it peacefully, but knowing the current democracy capitalism system believes itself as the only and best way of the universe, I’ll have to explore total war and destruction scenarios too.
For the most extreme scenarios, I’ll remove the current relative evil philosophy to replace it with the vision I developed in my previous writings, with life as the spiritual and philosophical line. On the same line of thinking, I will ask people to choose a side if things come to war, and to give a chance to everybody, I’ll say we’re all innocents that have been had unconsciously, carried away from old momentum.
This is my most heavy metal chapter, not in the sense of expressing ugly things, I previously did worst, but in the sense of the weight of it. Again I won’t be shy blasting at attitudes I don’t like, I won’t miss an opportunity to extrapolate my opinions even if they slip a little out of my subject, and I’ll talk a little about myself too, as usual.
I’ll explore ways to give birth to the life reality peacefully, to have space for it, but I won’t be limited to peaceful scenarios, too easy, that’s why I’ll develop the idea for the ultimate battle of good and evil right from the beginning, and that won’t be pretty since I always justify my choices. So I’ll select my enemies from the principles I developed until now and I’ll explain to what extent I’m ready to wage war to have a new reality on earth.
Part of the main subject will be to have space for the new reality, and for that I won’t go much farther than my own country; Canada. I will be hard with it but everybody is concerned, particularly North America, so I’ll emphasize my bad attitude there.
This is almost the end of my work, I will continue acting like I have faith that humanity will undertake such a quest, but I’m not an imbecile, you think those who took the means to control things will create space and affect their “economies” to create something where the like of themselves won’t control things? No, they won’t. Or you think people divided in all kind of personal beliefs while dreaming of big money will massively associate on a single cause and actually battle to the death for it, or to stop ego reality before it eats all resources? No they won’t, and I explained the multiple reasons all through my writings. So it was all a dream, but maybe not a dream, more like a possible thing humanity could have done if it switched priorities before too late.

One might argue that not much has changed, when it comes to expressing one’s opinions, since 1841 : those who have something to say will be heard, the world is still split between authors and readers, authors teach, readers listen and so on. I am not sure that Emerson, had he lived today, would agree to such an opinion. After all, web 2.0 was all about breaking this barrier between authors and readers. On the web, we are all readers but more importantly we are all authors: we post on Facebook, bring important contributions to other people’s articles and blog posts and Facebook updates. We live in a world ripe with opinions, arguments, fights over ideas, facts and sometimes people. Authorship & readership have today been combined in the general category of “contributors”.
I think Emerson would have loved such a world. He had some peculiar ideas on what happens to an individual when he/she thinks. We tend to consider nowadays that an individual becomes more individualised through reason and education. Emerson thought, on the contrary, that reason & education open up an individual to something bigger than he is, a “universal mind”, a single all-encompasing mind that stretches across all humankind and makes its history. The deeper you dig as an individual the more universal you become. Call this Hegelianism, transcendentalism, whichever -ism suits you. But you will find in these essays one of the most generous, precise, perceptive and intelligent ideas you will ever stumble upon.
