Ryan warned that the things in the dead-end creek
were in fact slimy, fetid, space alien freaks.
And any kid dumb enough to approach their dark lair
had better believe in the power of prayer.
For underneath that calm surface of warm water and frog belly
-waited sinister incarnate! Waited monster! Waited smelly!
If that kid, so determined to make his way across,
might step on some stones or some green fishy moss,
or perchance he should slip and step into their sludge,
then his boots, snared so tightly, would no longer budge.
And no matter how hard that child strained, tugged or yanked,
the Mud Gullumpers pulled harder and the boots slowly sank
‘til the child screamed in fear, and by clinging to rocks,
freed his feet and ran home in his wet, soiled socks.

I'm Going to School Next Year!
This Social Story™ was written for a child who started school but wasn’t coping so a decision was made to pull him out until the next year. The story explains this decision to him. It is blank so that your family can take photos for each page of your child doing each action or he/she might want to illustrate it. This can also be a good way to introduce the idea of school to your child, changing some of the words to say “I’m going to school next year” and remove “I don’t like school yet” and then add all of the preparations your team is making this year Although the story wasn't actually written for a child with autism spectrum disorder, it would be great for that purpose as well.

Jackie was born to a 41 yr old mother. An ultrasound showed Placenta Praevia and an abortion was offered. The fertilized egg had attached itself at the neck of the womb instead of at the top.
Circumstances prevented Jackie from ever knowing her biological father completely. Short term memory loss, addictions, insecurity, jealousy, lack of comprehension, phobias, fear of stepping out of comfort zones, all had a name – ASPERGERS.
At my next ultrasound, the radiographer told me that my baby had hydrocephalus as it had an abnormally enlarged head. I was offered an abortion because of my age.

"Hungry Minds" is a very short autobiographical tale about bullying, reading, and what lies in the heart of a writer: especially a very young one. In the brief essay, the writer discusses awkward and painful experiences related to entering Junior High School. It is written from the juvenile perspective and is appropriate for young readers.
Author's Note: The little girl on the cover is me back in the 70s. "Hungry Minds" is a story about childhood bullying and how a love of reading and fictional characters saved my life as I was frequently isolated and often depressed. Much of the bullying I experienced in childhood was related to being the biracial child of interracial parents, but the story is focuses on bullying related to being a shy and studious child. While the type of bullying I experienced is less prevalent now, many children experience bullying today. My heart goes out to them.
