A Broken System: Examining the Clark County Department of Family Services

by Misty Reigenborn

A termination of parental rights has been termed to be akin to the death penalty. In society, parents that lose their children to the child protective services system are often viewed as child abusers and neglectful parents.
But what if a parent lost their parental rights permanently because they were poor? That is what happened in 2008, when my husband and I lost our parental rights due to a "lack of resources."
In this system, poverty is all too often confused with neglect. And in Clark county where children are removed from their homes at a much higher rate than normal, children are being doubly failed. Children that could remain with their parents are being torn from loving arms forever, and the children that do need help all too often aren't receiving it.
A Broken System is not only the true story of what my family went through when dealing with DFS in Clark County, it is also a look into why Clark County DFS has been called a broken system that creates desperate parents and where children have no rights.

... and the Cardinals Came

by Joe H. Bell Jr

But in the end, I came to clearly understand what it felt like to be one of The Last of the Mohicans. The final bit of my blood passed away in 1994. I was 41 years old. The lingering aftermath is nothing less than a void … a sphere of darkness. It’s like traveling through one’s life completely covered in a shroud, visible only to oneself. Every morning, every evening, surrounded by friends, it doesn’t matter … if I’m laughing, it’s fake. Smiling, it’s fake. Everything seems to be counterfeit. The essence of the natural world is a long ago, blurred memory for me.
Folks that have suffered a similar fate as mine do all sorts of things to maintain some kind of meaning in their lives. For me, I discovered that writing about these things brought me peace, and even on occasion, joy; but ultimately, we all do what we have to do.
Along those lines, this is a true story about my departed extended family and a still aboveground best friend, all of which ended up on my memoir’s proverbial, editing room floor, under my direction.
