by Borden Ladner Gervais LLP

Now in its third edition, this book is directed toward patent agents/attorneys and lawyers, agent trainees, in-house patent counsel, technology transfer officers, and inventors specializing in the life sciences and chemistry. Never Forget Hiragana and Katakana

by Jonathan Heddle

this volume is meant as a companion to the never forget kanji series of books aimed at helping students to memorize the full set of japanese kanji required for fluency in everyday life. in order to memorize kanji however, you must know how to pronounce them and pronunciations are given using hiragana and katakana, the japanese phonetic syllabaries. in our kanji volumes we provide pronunciations using hiragana and katakana only: pronunciation using the roman alphabet is deliberately omitted as this leads to poor articulation. learning hiragana and katakana is the first step towards kanji fluency and must not be skipped. memorizing hiragana and katakana is much easier than memorizing kanji and can be achieved in a matter of a few days. this volume will help you achieve this goal using the same mnemonic methods as in the later kanji volumes.

Toward a Ludic Architecture: The Space of Play and Games

by Steffen P. Walz

Toward a Ludic Architecture" is a must-read for analyzing and designing play and games from an architectural standpoint. Such a contribution is particularly applicable in an era when games extend into physical designed space that is increasingly permeated by devices sensors and information networks allowing for rules and fictions to superimpose our everyday environments. Including a maze-like episodic and critical discussion of interweaving "play-grounds " "Toward a Ludic Architecture" is a playful look at the conceptual space of play and games.

Self-publishing creed

by Kerekes Pál

Only for the last decades has the author’s publishing received an inconvenient overtone. Our great poets, authors two hundred years ago had to look for subscribers for their book planning. In Hungary, as well as all around in Europe. It is worth remembering: the first printed book was also a self-publishing copy. Gutenberg did not make it to fulfill an order, did not have a distributor, a publisher; he did not even have an audience. For him the work was important, he had made many years of sacrafice, did not deal with anything else but to finish the book.
Nowadays, all you need is intention and respect towards word and letter: so writings can be addressed to the public.

How to Land (and Keep) a Literary Agent - (Includes How to Write a Great Query…

by Noah Lukeman

"Noah Lukeman, one of the top literary agents in New York, gave writers a great gift."--James Frey "This will certainly help writers of any kind defeat rejection and possibly score."--Writers.com Many books have been written about how to get published. But few have been written by literary agents, who receive thousands of submissions each year and who grapple with them on a daily basis. Even fewer have been written by active literary agents who are willing to write from the trenches and offer their perspective on why they reject manuscripts, and why they accept them. And no books have been written from an agent's perspective on what it's like, step by step, to work with an agent on a daily basis, and on how to assure that you maintain a long, happy working relationship with your agent. How to Land a Literary Agent is the first book written from an active literary agent's perspective that teaches authors why agents reject or accept manuscripts; why they decide to represent certain authors and not represent others; the best way to approach agents; the best way to work with an agent on a daily basis; and that offers them dozens of specific resources to make the difference in their finally finding the perfect agents for their work. New York literary agent Noah Lukeman, President of Lukeman Literary Management Ltd, has represented multiple New York Times bestsellers, winners of the Pulitzer Prize and American Book Award, National Book Award Finalists, and has himself written three critically-acclaimed books on the craft of writing, The First Five Pages, The Plot Thickens, and A Dash of Style. During his last 13 years as a literary agent he has read thousands of manuscripts and represented hundreds of book deals, and in this book he shares his insider's perspective, offers insight and practical tips about what works and what doesnt. How to Land a Literary Agent is a must-read for any author serious about getting published. Geared for a broad range of authors, its subject matter is relevant to authors of fiction and non-fiction, screenwriters, poets--any serious author--offering principles that will help lead to success no matter what your craft. Practical and engaging, filled with exercises, anecdotes and sidebars, this 200 plus page book takes you on a journey, and will bring you that much closer to finally landing a literary agent. How to Land a Literary Agent includes: * 10 Reasons Why You Need an Agent* 9 Steps to Building Your Bio * 8 Ways to Build Your Non-Fiction Platform* 13 Factors to Consider When Evaluating an Agent* 24 Free Resources for Researching Agents* 11 Fee-Based Resources for Researching Agents* The 4 Musts of Submitting* 4 Keys to Successful Follow Up* 3 Resources to Protect you from Agent Scams* 5 Ways an Agent Can Take Advantage of You* To Use a Book Doctor?* 7 Ways to Protect Yourself in an Agency Agreement* To Hire an Attorney?* What its Like to Work With an Agent * A Publication Timeline Chart* 15 Ways to Assure a Great Relationship With Your Agent* 6 Reasons to Drop Your Agent* To Self Publish?"Lukemans advice is practicaland often entails multiple, time-consuming stepswithout a hint of the flakiness that creeps into many writing guides."--Publishers Weekly This 75,000 word file includes bonus material: two additional books written by Mr. Lukeman--HOW TO WRITE A GREAT QUERY LETTER and ASK A LITERARY AGENT --for free!

Editor's Notebook

by Kalifer Deil

This is a guide to help writers edit their own works. It is often very difficult to find many of your own errors. This guide will provide a systematic approach that if followed diligently will get most of them, prepare for e-publishing and improve style as well. Editors are expensive for self publishers to use so I developed this guide to help me do my own editing.
I was a daydreamer in school and paid little attention to my teachers which ultimately lead me to an engineering career. There I could get by with an elementary grasp of the English language but I needed far more to tell stories that I felt compelled to tell. Hence, this book is a product of that evolution.
Squidoo has this book near the top of the list for free ebooks on writing.

Learning, knowledge and meaning: the Singapore diary - a book from the blog

by Julian Stodd

In the Social Age, knowledge is no longer enough: our value comes in our ability to create meaning. Tools like Google let us find out 'facts', but agile learners use those facts to inform their actions. But how do we do this? How do we make sense of the world around us and use that meaning to take action, to learn? This book, based upon five days of writing in Singapore, is a reflection on learning, knowledge and how we create meaning. It's a personal journey through the subject, based on reflections as diverse as the meaning of the Starbucks logo and the workings of the Singapore docklands. It's a journey of discovery, to discover how we create meaning.

Words Fail Me, What to Write to the Grieving

by Diane Ramirez

We aim to write words that will echo our sympathies to the family or friend suffering loss. And when we think about horrific events like 9/11, which took over 3,000 lives in one day—there are so many wild emotions rendering us speechless. Finding the words that mirror our heart might come easier if we consider the following:
1. Our relationship with the bereaved
2. Our relationship to the deceased
3. The religious faith of the bereaved and deceased
4. The circumstances surrounding the death of the deceased

Participatory Networks: The Library as Conversation

by R. David Lankes

Knowledge is created through conversation. Conversations can take place between friends and colleagues in the “here and now.” But, they can also take place over centuries, with the participants changing but the theme remaining the same, and the conversation being recorded in thousands of artifacts, like books, pictures, and digital files. In many conversations users need sophisticated processes to facilitate the conversation. Facilitation not only enriches conversations with diverse and deep information, it also serves as a memory keeper, documenting agreements and outcomes to facilitate future conversations. The library serves this vital role for many communities.
The implication of this rather abstract concept is that libraries are in the conversation business. This theoretical argument can be seen in traditional brick-and-mortar libraries as library speaker series, book groups, and even the collection development processes. Yet online, the library has fallen far short of this ideal of conversation facilitator. Key library systems, such as the catalog for example, are at best one-way conversations. Libraries have a great opportunity to provide invaluable conversational, participatory infrastructure to their communities online. By adopting concepts and technologies from Web 2.0 and tightly integrating them into their services, libraries can advance not just their communities but also their positions within them.
The opportunities inherent in participatory networks have not emerged because of current Internet developments such as Web 2.0, but, rather, these technologies make it easier to meet an identified and long-standing role of libraries. Wikis, blogs, and recommender systems replace dial-up bulletin boards and local databases as a means to empower our communities. What’s more, these technologies can bring the ideal of the participatory model to our most fundamental library systems. Libraries should adopt participatory network concepts and software not because they are new or sexy, but because they match our most fundamental mission: knowledge creation and dissemination.
This document describes the participatory model of libraries and provides an overview of current Web 2.0 technologies and a brief discussion of how current Library 2.0 efforts point the way to an even greater change in library as a facilitator of conversations. Specific challenges and opportunities of participatory networking are reviewed. Finally, the authors recommend the creation of a shared participatory test bed for libraries. This network would not only experiment with new collaborative Web technologies, but also work with library organizations and vendors to speed innovation in traditional library systems. Finally, the network test bed would create a shared infrastructure to provide participatory technologies – such as Wikis, blogs, and RSS feeds – to libraries for inclusion in their day-to-day services.

Sludge Management: An Exploratory Research Report in Bangladesh

by Md. Lokman Hossain

The treatment and disposal of industrial and residential sludge is an environmentally sensitive problem. Some traditional disposal routes, such as disposal at sea, are coming under pressure which necessitates finding alternatives. This book describes the effect of composted sludge on the growth of Acacia auriculiformis and Swietenia mahagoni seedlings in the nursery. The experiment was established and analyzed at the nursery of the Institute of Forestry and Environmental sciences, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh with a view to find out a suitable substitute of forest top soil for raising quality seedlings by using composted sludge incorporation with soil. The seedlings were evaluated in seven different treatments for three months. Field germination, nodulation status, and physical growth parameters of seedlings namely; shoot height, root length, collar diameter, fresh and dry weight of shoot, root and nodule were recorded after one, two and three months of seed sown and chemical parameters of every treatment such as pH, organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, chromium, nickel, manganese, cadmium and zinc were analyzed before and after the experiment. Field germination percentage of A. auriculiformis and S. mahagoni seeds were highest in treatment T5 and T6 respectively. Among the sludge amended soil, treatment T5 for A. auriculiformis and treatment T3 for S. mahagoni showed better performance of shoot and root growth compared to other treatments. The highest collar diameter was observed in the combination of soil and residential sludge for both the species. The highest number of nodule was recorded from soil amended with residential sludge and highest fresh and dry weight of nodule also found from the same combination. Shoot and root fresh weight of A. auriculiformis was highest in combination of soil and residential sludge in the ratio of . But for S. mahagoni highest shoot fresh weight was in treatment T3 and root fresh weight was in treatment T2, moreover, highest shoot and root dry weight was found in the same combination. Percentage of organic carbon and nutrients content were highest in soil amended with residential sludge both before and after the experiment over A. auriculiformis and S. mahagoni seedlings. From the study, it can be recommended that soil amended with residential sludge on A. auriculiformis and soil amended with industrial sludge on S. mahagoni provided better performance compared to other treatments.

Typical Absentminded Professor buried in research. Teleology Enthusiast. I've worked in the Entertainment Industry. I have eclectic tastes and a diverse background, which I feel gives me keener insight and perspective on things. I served as a sales manager. I used to write instruction and technical manuals for companies. I taught classes on how gaming concepts from World of WarCraft can be applied to daily life. I'm working on a research project collecting data from the Associated Press Feed and the Internet Movie Database developing a theory that a coherent pattern can be mapped out with celebrities, their careers, and birthdates. I'm especially working with concepts regarding the Gaia Theory by James Lovelock and the Unconscious Collective Theory by Carl Jung. I'm developing theories regarding my research on the concept of Subconscious Psychology. I especially take keen interest in astronomy news and studying the Sun's solar flares. My current game plan right now is to offer a selection of free books while I'm an unknown author to showcase my writing style. Hopefully, people will enjoy my literature and I can develop a fanbase of readers who will purchase my books that I do charge for. The plan is to just write a ton of books on various topics to show how the wisdom learned from studying Cryptology and using metaphors and analogies taken from other fields of study can be applied to all aspects of life. You don't need to know everything. You just need to know how to find information and have the reasoning skills and comprehension to understand how what is seen in one aspect of your life is applicable to another part. It simplifies your life when you follow a formula or have a standard operating system to govern over yourself rather than trying to juggle multiple masks for the various roles, responsibilities, and tasks you take on. I hope that by showing what I know in a wide variety of fields will lend credibility to my knowledge and experience that I impart in my writing. That will, in turn, increase the value of my written work so that people will feel they're getting their money's worth. If nothing else, I try to make my writing educational as well as entertaining. If all goes well, I would like to use the revenues generated from my writing to further my research in Astronomy, Subconscious Psychology, and creating more awareness on how the concept of a living planet can fix a lot of the world problems that plague our society. My belief is that if people realize that Earth is a living and feeling organism rather than an inanimate piece of rock, people will treat the world and each other better. I'm not a tree hugger, vegetarian, or anything like that. I just think it's unfortunate we see a lot of senseless violence. Maybe if people realized that Earth is alive and that we all work together to further its existence, it will energize humankind into bringing forth a new Golden Age of Science, World Peace, and a brighter future for generations to come. I'm a huge fan of puns, which stems from having read the Xanth Series by Piers Anthony. I especially liked the Incarnations of Immortality Series. The Belgariad and Mallorean Series by David Eddings is another favorite. The 13th State of Rhode Island joined the United States on 5/29 of 1790. My literature would be referred to as a "Rod Island Read." I chose the pen name Rod Island because my name is Rod and I was born on 5/29. If you have this deep longing for new and inspiring books and have a thing for chickens, let me be your Mr. Write :)

English as She is Spoke

by Jose da Fonseca

“If you like, I will hot it”
April is the cruelest month, they say, and yet, we find it to be the funniest too. For what other month starts with the Fool’s Day and keeps getting warmer and warmer as we laugh winter away? To celebrate this, we decided to publish today the perfect companion for jesters and hoaxers. In truth we say that foolishness has never looked more fashionable than after reading “English as She Is Spoke”, the famous 19th century Portuguese-English phrasebook that Mark Twain once simply dismissed by saying: “IT IS PERFECT.”
Listen to the master, as he knew a thing or two about jokes and how to have fun with language and words.
This fabulous language tool is divided into logical and useful chapters, varying from “Defects of the Body,” “Woman Objects,” and “Diseases” to “Parties a town,” “Eatings,” ”Chastisements,” including “Familiar Phrases” such as “Are you altered?” “Dress your hairs” or “Put your confidence at my”. If these didn’t make you smile already, you will surely succumb to the hilarious charm of the chapters entitled “Familiar Letters” or…“Idiotisms and Proverbs.”
Here’s a sample of its humor—can it to deny it if you dare!
“Do you study?
Yes, sir, I attempts to translate of french by portuguese.
Do you know already the principal grammars rules?
I am appleed my self at to learn its by heart.
Do speak french alwais?
Some times: though I flay it yet.
You jest, you does express you self very well.”
Fool’s Day, you come too rare.

Introduction to Frankenstein: Origins and Aftermath

by David Sheppard

In the summer of 1816, five young people came together on the shores of Lake Geneva to spend the summer. It would be one of the most important events in literary history and result in the creation of a work that would never go out of print. That work is the novel Frankenstein. This is the story of how it all happened, and the tragedy that struck in its aftermath. Provides short biographies for Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and John Polidori. Painstakingly researched and thoroughly documented. 134 footnotes.
