The Operation

by Colin Marks

A late night knock at a door starts a ‘Kafkaesque’ tale of confusion and frustration in this latest 4,000 word short story from British writer Colin Marks.
This story came to me when I was at the bedside of my girlfriend who had just had a hip replacement only hours earlier. She explained she hadn’t been nervous before the operation as the doctor had come 'out of the blue' and told her they were ready for her. It was hours before she was expecting the operation to take place so she hadn’t had time for the anxiety to build! I’m sure the story is influenced by Dino Buzzati Traverso’s 'Seven Floors' or Franz Kafka’s 'The Trial', both of which I’d read a decade before, and are highly recommended. If you enjoyed this story, please try my others. And for those who are interested, the new hips are doing great!

The Hangman's Replacement - Sprout of Disruption

by Taona Dumisani Chiveneko

SYNOPSIS
Zimbabwe’s last hangman retired in 2004. As the nation drifted towards abolition, no determined effort was launched to find a replacement. However, the discovery of carnivorous flame lilies at the Great Zimbabwe monument triggered a spirited search for a new executioner. Those who know why this discovery energized the recruitment effort refused to talk.
The frantic attempts to find a new hangman were impeded by the lack of suitable candidates. Well-placed sources confirmed that the fear of ngozi was a deterrent. According to this traditional belief, the spirit of a murdered person torments the killer and his family for generations. However, this is only half the story. Several promising applicants did come forward. None met the minimum requirements for the job. The selection criteria were designed to exclude the mentally ill, the vindictive, and the sadistic. However, they did not rule out the desperate.
The Sprout of Disruption introduces the pantheon of characters whose lives have been set alight by the plant which sparked the recruitment effort. It tells the story of the aspiring hangman who was obsessed with securing the job, the sympathizers who fought to protect him from his prize, and the anxious men who believed that emptying death row would end their horror before the meat-eating plants constricted around their necks.

KIRKUS REVIEW

A desperate villager’s quest to become Zimbabwe’s newest executioner kicks off this intriguing debut horror novel involving man-eating plants, organ harvesting and other uncanny oddities.
Abel Muranda is a devoted family man determined to do whatever it takes to feed his starving rural family, even if it means journeying far into the big city on foot in the hope of landing a job as the government’s hangman. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s ruling elite is in an uproar because someone has created a batch of carnivorous flame lilies capable of digging up the dead—and the government’s ghastly secrets, as the plants have been unearthing unmarked graves. Nothing is as it seems in Chiveneko’s science-fiction–tinged tale, which introduces readers to a lethal cast of bad guys and bad girls with tangled motivations.
One intriguing subplot follows a man charged with creating a special gallows to be used for executions; he uses discarded weapons of war as his raw materials and would rather spend time cuddling up to his cold, metallic creation than to his warm, loving wife. At nearly 500 pages, this intricately woven novel is a disconcerting parable exploded to epic proportions. The author renders its many characters, from the mad genius responsible for the impending botanical apocalypse, to the prostitute/undercover operative who falls in love with Abel, to the seemingly simple Abel himself, with frightening subtlety and detail.
One member of the elite, called Doll Eyes, is described as follows: “Planted into the lower part of his skull was a jaw of menacing proportions. If someone ever tied to mug him at gunpoint, all he had to do was clench it. This alone would demoralize the robber.” The boughs of this arboreal shocker threaten to creak under the weight of its ever-mounting plot, but they never quite crack. Instead, readers are left wondering just how deep the roots go.
A thought-provoking, singularly strange and absorbing novel.

INDIEREADER REVIEW

The last hangman in Zimbabwe retired in 2004, but since the death penalty seemed on the verge of abolition, there was no real effort to hire a new one.
Suddenly, however, top officials are desperately seeking a new candidate, though their selection criteria are mysterious. Abel Muranda, an honorable and ethical man from a tiny rural village, with a family in danger of starvation, applies for the job for the sake of its good salary and health care, but what hidden risks will it entail? Meanwhile, a particular sort of flame lily has been biologically engineered to seek out corpses, particularly human corpses, for its nourishment, and this combines with the traditional belief in ngozi, the vengeful spirits of the murdered, to set off panic in the ranks of powerful men with dangerous secrets to hide.
Among those caught up in this shadowy war are a genius lawyer so misanthropic that he never leaves his office, a prostitute in love with the one man she can’t have, an Englishman whose wife must compete with his obsessive desire to design the perfect gallows, and a magistrate whose honest determination to follow the law saddles him with the nickname, “The Hanging Judge,” among a host of other bizarre and fascinating characters. Can the friends Abel has made in his brief time in the city rescue him from his own determination to get this job? Who is the mysterious genius behind the carnivorous flowers, and why has he loosed them on the world? And what will happen when the secretive “Bakers” complete their recipe?
This is a work of completely bizarre genius. The author has an almost Wodehousian gift with words, decorating his pages with phrases that can make the reader laugh out loud, question long-held assumptions about reality, or send a chill up the spine with just a few deft descriptive touches. Some of the characters, and the situations they find themselves in, can be completely off-the-wall, but the author’s writing ability carefully makes them almost plausible, even natural.
The plot wanders from person to person, place to place, adding more dimensions to the story, without ever becoming dull or slow. The mystery unfolds itself elegantly, revealing itself through different perspectives, until the whole tapestry is unveiled in all its color and depth. Subtle details are not neglected, and every one of them reveals or reflects something vital. The result leaves the reader fascinated, turning page after page just to see what could possibly happen next, until the book is finished and the reader looks up, startled, to find that hours have gone by without being noticed.
There are occasional problems with the format – the news articles, for example, are presented in a paler grey type which is sometimes hard on the eyes. Additionally, some aspects of the plot are not for the squeamish, or those easily disturbed by graphic descriptions. But these are very minor issues.
This is a delightful book for those who enjoy having their perspectives stretched, who take delight in the weird and idiosyncratic, and who love watching a master author do breathtaking juggling acts with the English language.

A Grave Too Small

by Sheila Jecks

Coming out of his reverie Olav, with tears in his eyes finally went down the steps to look at his poor misshapen daughter sprawled in a heap at the foot of the steps.
He went to the shed and picked up his shovel, paced back and forth in front of the house unmindful of the snow that was falling, covering him and the little house. Finally he went to the water's edge and looked at the river, but there was no comfort there either. At last he went to the small apple tree he planted that fall and started to dig a hole.
They found me under the apple tree.
I was lying on top of the patch of ground that wouldn't grow any flowers. Even though it was snowing, you could see where I tried to dig a hole with my bare hands.
I couldn't remember what happened, especially why I would be trying to dig a hole under the tree in winter.
Jim took me off to our new doctor in Delta on the south side of the Fraser River. He recommended bed rest. No Christmas hassle, just sleep.
The kids helped but they still needed direction and I couldn't hear from upstairs so I brought my quilt and pillow and settled myself on the living room couch. Everything was still heading towards a wonderful Christmas.
The next day dawned bright and sunny, it was a wonderful Christmas day. That was the end of bed rest; I got up and made buttermilk waffles, our special Christmas treat. Jim even made the coffee. The kids laughing and teasing set the breakfast table. The wonderful smell of Christmas coffee seeped into my nostrils as I sat at the kitchen table savoring a steaming cup of coffee when I happened to glance out the kitchen window.
There was a man digging under the apple tree. I got up and went out to the porch and called to him, he didn't listen. He just kept digging.
The kids found me outside.
Under the apple tree.
Again!

The Liz

by Pete Bowen

From the online reviews of Pete Bowen's first book "QB1" available for free:
“Had me on the edge of my seat until the end. One of the best books I’ve read."
"For readers who like authors like Lewis Kincaid. This book is as good as almost any Patterson does.”
“Sorry it ended! Great read!”
“A very fast paced book which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Wish there was another to follow with the same characters.”
“This was an amazing book! One of the best books I have ever read and I’ve read some good ones. So good, I was surprised that it was free.”
“The dialogue is irreverent and lots of fun. The interesting relationship between the private eye and his young assistant is explained as the story develops. Sports fans and mystery readers will both enjoy this one. It has the makings of a fun series. There is even some steamy romance. I could see this as a popular movie.”
“I really enjoyed this book, just plain entertaining!”
“Gradually characters are filled in and one of the most engaging characters is a 12 year old boy genius, Roger.”
“I really enjoyed this book, just plain entertaining!”
“I'm not someone who likes to think of cussing around young people. There is cussing in front of Roger and by Roger... but later in the story we learn that the detective and the 12 year old are more like brothers. Well, I've heard siblings talk when they don't think adults are around, especially boys... and the way Roger and his detective friend interact is very realistic... including the language.”
“I will look for more books by this author. These characters... wildly fascinating and sometimes improbably successful would be fun to meet again in another book. I enjoyed this read and think you might, too. “
“This was my first Pete Bowen book and I really got into it. That’s a surprise because I am not a sport person, but I got caught up in the mystery, well done.”

Project Cyclops

by Thomas Hoover

“A high-tech launch site, a missing nuke, and Arab terrorists with nothing to lose . . .”
In the sun-dappled waters of the Aegean, ex-agent Michael Vance pilots the Odyssey II, a handmade replica of the sailcraft of the ancient hero Ulysses. Out of nowhere, a Russian Hind gunship with Arab terrorists at the helm fires upon the tiny ship below. The terrorists’ destination is a tiny Aegean island where a U.S. aerospace corporation carefully guards the Cyclops 20-megawatt laser launch facility. But the company security force is no match for the firepower of the Arab invasion and the launch site is quickly overrun. With helpless horror, the executives can only watch as renegade technicians convert the launch vehicle into a ballistic missile that can deliver their stolen thermonuclear warhead to any city in the U.S.
Left for dead amid the smoking ruins of Odyssey II, Michael Vance washes up on the occupied island – and becomes America’s only hope.

The War of Immensities

by Barry Klemm

“I think the planet is in trouble and it’s screaming out for help. I believe you are the first to hear the voice of Gaia. ”The Earth is shaking itself apart. Volcanic eruptions of
escalating magnitude and frequency threaten to collapse the planet within two years. Norwegian-American Harley Thyssen, the aging enfant terrible of the Earth Sciences, heads
up Project Earthshaker, aided by his volcano-chasing student Jami Shastri and seven innocent bystanders drafted because of their personal experience of the mysterious Shastri Effect.
Six of his team are all miraculous survivors of the first eruption in the series, sharing eight days in a New Zealand hospital in a strange coma apparently unrelated to their injuries They
recover and return to their normal lives, but a few months later, they are drawn together again, to meet up in the middle of the Australian bush for no accountable reason, and realise that it is
not a remarkable coincidence.
Kevin Wagner, American businessman, is sure a new, more advanced species of human has evolved and he is their logical leader; Andromeda Starlight, second-rate entertainer from Trinidad,
evolves into the very personification of the Goddess Gaia; Brian Carrick, truck driver from Melbourne, whose simple Science Fiction approach to the effect allows him to explain the inexplicable to a desperate world; Lorna Simmons, Irish born receptionist from Auckland, a
passionate girl who believes the Shastri Effect is a higher expression of love, and so falls in love with an entire planet and it with her;
Chrissie Rice, French-Vietnamese skier, knows it is the hand of God at work and threatens to become the first modern non-Catholic saint;
Joe Solomon was a trustworthy Greek Lawyer, until his belief that it is all a big government cover-up causes him to defraud the US taxpayers of millions of dollars to fund the project;
And with them, Dr Felicity Campbell, a humble GP
from Wellington, who originally treated the six and has inadvertently become the world’s leading expert on the Shastri Effect, if only because everyone else knows even less about it than she does.
Slowly they are drawn into Harley Thyssen’s web, to become warriors in a battle against forces at the very limits of human comprehension. For if Thyssen is right, then there is a war raging throughout the cosmos that began with the birth of the universe and will continue until the end of time, and now it’s humanity’s turn to enter the conflict.
