Fire and Ice - Liam Campbell #1

by Dana Stabenow

Alaska State Trooper Liam Campbell, demoted and reassigned to the remote Bush town of Newenham, literally steps off the plane into a murder scene. Dealing with death is never simple, but when the woman leaning over the body proves to be Liam's old flame, it’s evident that his new job is about to become much more complicated.
From Newenham’s cast of eccentric—and sometimes hair-trigger—residents, to the intricate ballet of fishing boats rushing against time to net their limit, Stabenow captures the contagious spirit of melancholy madness that pervades America’s last frontier. Of course, small town tensions tend to simmer just beneath the surface, and murder, once done, has a tendency to happen again...
New York Times bestseller and Edgar Award winner Dana Stabenow, a life-long Alaskan, is best known for her Kate Shugak mysteries. She has created a compelling new protagonist in State Trooper Liam Campbell.

Created, The Destroyer - The Destroyer #1

by Richard Sapir

When you're on death row, minutes from the electric chair, and a hook-handed monk offers to save your life if you'll just swallow a simple little pill... what've you got to lose? You take the pill. Then you wake up, officially "dead," in the back of an ambulance, headed for an undisclosed location. Welcome to your new life, working for CURE, the most secret, most deniable, most extra-judicial government agency ever to exist. Only the President knows about it, and even he doesn't control it.
That's what happened to Remo Williams, a New Jersey cop framed for a murder he didn't commit. Framed by the very people who saved him, in fact. And now, trained in esoteric martial arts by Chiun, master of Sinanju, he's going to become the ultimate killing machine. Remo will be America's last line of defense against mad scientists, organized crime, ancient undead gods, and anything else that threatens the Constitution. Remo Williams is the Destroyer.
An action-adventure series leavened with social and political satire, the Destroyer novels have been thrilling readers worldwide for decades.

The Operation

by Colin Marks

A late night knock at a door starts a ‘Kafkaesque’ tale of confusion and frustration in this latest 4,000 word short story from British writer Colin Marks.
This story came to me when I was at the bedside of my girlfriend who had just had a hip replacement only hours earlier. She explained she hadn’t been nervous before the operation as the doctor had come 'out of the blue' and told her they were ready for her. It was hours before she was expecting the operation to take place so she hadn’t had time for the anxiety to build! I’m sure the story is influenced by Dino Buzzati Traverso’s 'Seven Floors' or Franz Kafka’s 'The Trial', both of which I’d read a decade before, and are highly recommended. If you enjoyed this story, please try my others. And for those who are interested, the new hips are doing great!

The Delphi Chronicle, Book 1: The Manuscript

by Russell Blake

The Delphi Chronicle is a serial trilogy that chronicles the saga of NY private eye Michael Derrigan, as he unwittingly comes into possession of a manuscript that will change the world order if its secrets are aired. Clandestine factions of the U.S. government will do anything to keep the secrets buried, and a trail of butchery follows Derrigan as he races for his life in a chase that takes him from New York, to Mexico, to Havana. An epic roller-coaster ride of a thriller, The Delphi Chronicle's unflinching and often disturbing twists and turns question the nature of reality in a post-modern world of lies, deceit and betrayal.

Turbulence 3: Red-Eye Dawn (gay romance)

by Jordan Castillo Price

Paul Cronin has never been one to improvise. Now he’s found himself in the middle of a brand new world, with brand new rules. He would be the first one to play by those rules—heck, he’d relish them—if only he knew what they were.
Luckily for Paul, his predecessor Marlin already discovered the lay of the land, and that research is passed along to him. It should help him orient himself. Unfortunately, Marlin’s logic is so bizarre, poring through his notes offers very little comfort. What kind of man believes in all that airy-fairy new age stuff?
And, more importantly, what kind of man is Paul?

The Hangman's Replacement - Sprout of Disruption

by Taona Dumisani Chiveneko

SYNOPSIS
Zimbabwe’s last hangman retired in 2004. As the nation drifted towards abolition, no determined effort was launched to find a replacement. However, the discovery of carnivorous flame lilies at the Great Zimbabwe monument triggered a spirited search for a new executioner. Those who know why this discovery energized the recruitment effort refused to talk.
The frantic attempts to find a new hangman were impeded by the lack of suitable candidates. Well-placed sources confirmed that the fear of ngozi was a deterrent. According to this traditional belief, the spirit of a murdered person torments the killer and his family for generations. However, this is only half the story. Several promising applicants did come forward. None met the minimum requirements for the job. The selection criteria were designed to exclude the mentally ill, the vindictive, and the sadistic. However, they did not rule out the desperate.
The Sprout of Disruption introduces the pantheon of characters whose lives have been set alight by the plant which sparked the recruitment effort. It tells the story of the aspiring hangman who was obsessed with securing the job, the sympathizers who fought to protect him from his prize, and the anxious men who believed that emptying death row would end their horror before the meat-eating plants constricted around their necks.

KIRKUS REVIEW

A desperate villager’s quest to become Zimbabwe’s newest executioner kicks off this intriguing debut horror novel involving man-eating plants, organ harvesting and other uncanny oddities.
Abel Muranda is a devoted family man determined to do whatever it takes to feed his starving rural family, even if it means journeying far into the big city on foot in the hope of landing a job as the government’s hangman. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s ruling elite is in an uproar because someone has created a batch of carnivorous flame lilies capable of digging up the dead—and the government’s ghastly secrets, as the plants have been unearthing unmarked graves. Nothing is as it seems in Chiveneko’s science-fiction–tinged tale, which introduces readers to a lethal cast of bad guys and bad girls with tangled motivations.
One intriguing subplot follows a man charged with creating a special gallows to be used for executions; he uses discarded weapons of war as his raw materials and would rather spend time cuddling up to his cold, metallic creation than to his warm, loving wife. At nearly 500 pages, this intricately woven novel is a disconcerting parable exploded to epic proportions. The author renders its many characters, from the mad genius responsible for the impending botanical apocalypse, to the prostitute/undercover operative who falls in love with Abel, to the seemingly simple Abel himself, with frightening subtlety and detail.
One member of the elite, called Doll Eyes, is described as follows: “Planted into the lower part of his skull was a jaw of menacing proportions. If someone ever tied to mug him at gunpoint, all he had to do was clench it. This alone would demoralize the robber.” The boughs of this arboreal shocker threaten to creak under the weight of its ever-mounting plot, but they never quite crack. Instead, readers are left wondering just how deep the roots go.
A thought-provoking, singularly strange and absorbing novel.

INDIEREADER REVIEW

The last hangman in Zimbabwe retired in 2004, but since the death penalty seemed on the verge of abolition, there was no real effort to hire a new one.
Suddenly, however, top officials are desperately seeking a new candidate, though their selection criteria are mysterious. Abel Muranda, an honorable and ethical man from a tiny rural village, with a family in danger of starvation, applies for the job for the sake of its good salary and health care, but what hidden risks will it entail? Meanwhile, a particular sort of flame lily has been biologically engineered to seek out corpses, particularly human corpses, for its nourishment, and this combines with the traditional belief in ngozi, the vengeful spirits of the murdered, to set off panic in the ranks of powerful men with dangerous secrets to hide.
Among those caught up in this shadowy war are a genius lawyer so misanthropic that he never leaves his office, a prostitute in love with the one man she can’t have, an Englishman whose wife must compete with his obsessive desire to design the perfect gallows, and a magistrate whose honest determination to follow the law saddles him with the nickname, “The Hanging Judge,” among a host of other bizarre and fascinating characters. Can the friends Abel has made in his brief time in the city rescue him from his own determination to get this job? Who is the mysterious genius behind the carnivorous flowers, and why has he loosed them on the world? And what will happen when the secretive “Bakers” complete their recipe?
This is a work of completely bizarre genius. The author has an almost Wodehousian gift with words, decorating his pages with phrases that can make the reader laugh out loud, question long-held assumptions about reality, or send a chill up the spine with just a few deft descriptive touches. Some of the characters, and the situations they find themselves in, can be completely off-the-wall, but the author’s writing ability carefully makes them almost plausible, even natural.
The plot wanders from person to person, place to place, adding more dimensions to the story, without ever becoming dull or slow. The mystery unfolds itself elegantly, revealing itself through different perspectives, until the whole tapestry is unveiled in all its color and depth. Subtle details are not neglected, and every one of them reveals or reflects something vital. The result leaves the reader fascinated, turning page after page just to see what could possibly happen next, until the book is finished and the reader looks up, startled, to find that hours have gone by without being noticed.
There are occasional problems with the format – the news articles, for example, are presented in a paler grey type which is sometimes hard on the eyes. Additionally, some aspects of the plot are not for the squeamish, or those easily disturbed by graphic descriptions. But these are very minor issues.
This is a delightful book for those who enjoy having their perspectives stretched, who take delight in the weird and idiosyncratic, and who love watching a master author do breathtaking juggling acts with the English language.

Looking for Chet Baker - An Evan Horne Mystery

by Bill Moody

Pianist Evan Horne’s European interlude lands him a gig in Amsterdam, where the old jazz clubs are alive and well. But here he unexpectedly finds himself reliving the last days of legendary trumpeter Chet Baker, who died under mysterious circumstances. Did Baker fall from a hotel balcony or was he pushed? The answers lead Horne on an odyssey into one of the greatest mysteries of the jazz world—and beyond. Horne’s longtime buddy Ace Buffington, in Amsterdam researching the late jazz great’s life and tragic death, has disappeared. Ace’s trail parallels that of Baker’s last days, so Horne does what he does best: improvise. He finds himself following the same path into Baker’s dark—even dangerous—past and confronting his own deep-rooted melancholy. In the smoky clubs and on the mean, exotic streets of Amsterdam, Horne hits all the right notes in a world where playing it by heart can make you a legend as easily as it can get you killed.

The Ragtime Kid - A Ragtime Mystery #1

by Larry Karp

Brun Campbell, a 15-year-old piano-playing fool, hears Scott Joplin’s “Maple Leaf Rag” played one 1898 afternoon in Oklahoma City. It’s destiny calling. Asking for ragtime lessons, he’s told, “No, Ragtime is colored music.” So Brun runs away from the family farm to Sedalia, Missouri, to persuade Joplin to take him on as a pupil. What Brun doesn’t expect is to trip over the body of a young woman. He thoughtlessly picks up a couple of items before he rushes away from the murder scene. When Edward Fitzgerald, a man who befriended Brun his first night in town, is arrested for the woman’s murder, Brun is certain he’s innocent. But if the boy shows anyone the things he pocketed at the scene—things he now knows belonged to Scott Joplin—he’ll point the finger at the composer...and himself. Brun decides to get Fitzgerald, Joplin, and himself off the hook by finding the real killer, but for that he eventually needs some help from Dr. Overstreet, the alcoholic town mayor; and John Stark, a man pushing sixty, who’s been employing Brun at his music store. Sedalia is rife with suspects, some of them opportunists bent on stealing Joplin’s music. And then there are the girls and women—mysteries to Brun—like a teenager seized with religious fever, a couple of mischievous prostitutes, and an attractive, ambitious young woman with a hint of scarlet in her past, who further complicate his pursuit of the killer.

Underdogs: The First Stories

by Geonn Cannon

Ariadne Willow is a private investigator with a secret weapon: she's canidae, a person with the ability to change into a wolf at will. Her abilities grant her the ability to get into secure areas without causing alarm, and her heightened senses make tracking people a snap. With the added help of her assistant Dale Frye, there isn't a case Ari can't crack.
Whether checking on the welfare of a runaway daughter or taking down a trio of canidae jewel thieves, Ari's special abilities get her into places ordinary investigators can't go. Occasionally her canidae side throws her a complication, like suddenly going into heat during a case or leaving her naked with partial amnesia in the middle of a field. Fortunately Ari isn't just a furry face and has a trick or two up her sleeves even when she's human.

Stormbringer: Book One of the Predator's Code

by G.R. Boden

Cinder Moss is miserable and lonely and one lunch period away from yet another school fight. But everything changes when she’s whisked from her middle school cafeteria by four otherworldly young female warriors who have forsaken everything in order to protect Cinder with their lives. After making a hero’s pledge, Cinder is taken on a harrowing journey to the Proving Grounds, an enchanted valley where heroes-in-training are schooled before leaving on quests. There she meets Odin, the Norse god of war, and learns that despite her noble heritage and surprising abilities, Odin doubts her chances to be anything more than a worthless human. Charged with wielding Talon, the legendary sword of the First Predator, Cinder must conquer a menacing creature that threatens to topple the tree that keeps the world in balance, and in the process, prove her worth. Cinder journeys to the Underworld, conveniently hidden beneath a strip mall in California where she will fulfill an ancient prophesy and help decide the fate of the world. Along the way Cinder faces petulant valkyries, shape-shifting hobos, gigantic wolves, handsome half-gods and clingy half-elves, kick-starting a storm in the halls of Asgard that will reverberate through time if she fails to stop Loki, God of Mischief and Deceit.

Calamity Jayne

by Kathleen Bacus

Book one in the Calamity Jayne mystery series finds Tressa Jayne Turner up-to-here with the never-ending string of dumb-blonde jokes and a lifetime nickname that's harder to get rid of than lint from a belly button. Crowned "Calamity Jayne" Tressa's out to gain a little hometown respect--or die trying. Unfortunately for Tressa, that just may be the case. When Tressa breaks down on a dark, deserted road, and discovers a body in the trunk instead of a spare tire, she returns to find the stiff gone and she's driven off in the wrong car. Determined to prove there's more to this cockeyed cowgirl than meets the eye, Tressa thinks she’s just been handed the perfect opportunity to get "Ranger Rick", the doubting Don Juan of the DNR, and a skeptical citizenry to finally take her seriously. How? By solving a murder no one else believes happened...No one, that is, except the killer.
When Tressa teams up with Ranger Rick’s granddad, a wannabe crime solver, and the body count begins to rise, it’s heartburn in the Heartland time. Tressa Jayne would tell you her momma didn't raise no dummies, but the jury's still out on that.
Yup. No doubt about it. Calamity Jayne is in it up to her hot pink, snakeskin cowgirl boots and matching rhinestone belt--and it's a matter of life and death, respect and reputation, love, happiness and the whole shebang in this cowgirl’s quest for a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Guilt by Association

by Kelvin L. Reed

Jayson Cook is reaping the rewards of a flourishing law practice in Boston. However, his comfortable life is turned upside down after he agrees to represent Brian Stone, a white supremacist charged with planting a bomb that destroyed an inner city church, killing a twelve-year-old black girl.
Jayson believes an ethical lawyer provides his client with a vigorous defense no matter the crime, and Brian Stone is no exception. His efforts to free Stone garner strong opposition not only from a highly successful prosecutor and the local black community, but even from his own wife. Adding to his problems, a young, seductive woman from his past returns to capitalize on an error in judgment he made years before; an error that if made public, could cost him his license to practice law and his family.

A Grave Too Small

by Sheila Jecks

Coming out of his reverie Olav, with tears in his eyes finally went down the steps to look at his poor misshapen daughter sprawled in a heap at the foot of the steps.
He went to the shed and picked up his shovel, paced back and forth in front of the house unmindful of the snow that was falling, covering him and the little house. Finally he went to the water's edge and looked at the river, but there was no comfort there either. At last he went to the small apple tree he planted that fall and started to dig a hole.
They found me under the apple tree.
I was lying on top of the patch of ground that wouldn't grow any flowers. Even though it was snowing, you could see where I tried to dig a hole with my bare hands.
I couldn't remember what happened, especially why I would be trying to dig a hole under the tree in winter.
Jim took me off to our new doctor in Delta on the south side of the Fraser River. He recommended bed rest. No Christmas hassle, just sleep.
The kids helped but they still needed direction and I couldn't hear from upstairs so I brought my quilt and pillow and settled myself on the living room couch. Everything was still heading towards a wonderful Christmas.
The next day dawned bright and sunny, it was a wonderful Christmas day. That was the end of bed rest; I got up and made buttermilk waffles, our special Christmas treat. Jim even made the coffee. The kids laughing and teasing set the breakfast table. The wonderful smell of Christmas coffee seeped into my nostrils as I sat at the kitchen table savoring a steaming cup of coffee when I happened to glance out the kitchen window.
There was a man digging under the apple tree. I got up and went out to the porch and called to him, he didn't listen. He just kept digging.
The kids found me outside.
Under the apple tree.
Again!
