To sell out, or not to sell out? That is the modern day existential question.
Rob H and his band, The Merry, seek revenge against an advertising executive for stealing their song lyric to use as a car commercial slogan in a story about making the choice between a secure and stable life vs. risking it all to follow big dreams.
The Stolen Lyric offers a provocative and unconventional take on the relationship between art and commerce through a modern re-imagining of the adventures of Robin Hood and his band of merry men set in the world of Rock music. Rob, LJ, Will Scarlet, and Tucker are The Merry – a young Rock band touring in a van and dreaming of their big break. Their touring van doubles as a getaway car since they steal from rich braggers to pay for band expenses and to help the good folks in need they meet along the way. Rob is content with a rebel’s existence, dedicated to nothing but freedom, authenticity, creativity, and good times until a betrayal from the past changes everything. Rob is furious when he hears one of his song lyrics used as a popular car commercial slogan, and even more so when he realizes that the traitor is his former best friend Sheriff, who left the band three years ago to write jingles for advertising agency Nottingham & Nottingham and took Rob’s girlfriend, Loxley, with him. Now the band will employ the classic Robin Hood methods of trickery and disguise to get back at Sheriff and defend the spirit of Rock and their way of life against the pressure to grow up, sell out, settle down, and get with the program.
But, as the quest for vengeance takes an unexpected turn, Rob is forced to make the ultimate choice: To sell out, or not to sell out?
