Kiss Chronicles

by Virginia M. Sanders

When I turned 30 without getting my first kiss — yes, you read that right. Read over it again if you need to. Anyway, when I turned 30, I decided I had to take action and get a first kiss to be remembered. So I devised a method to get my first kiss in a way that would be guaranteed to make it meaningful: I would auction off my first kiss for charity.
In this quirky memoir, I share details from my life, exploring exactly how it was that I came to a kissless crossroads at age 30, and I tell all about the exciting and challenging experiences I faced as I developed the Kiss Chronicles project.
Note: This ebook is free, but the story invites readers to make an optional donation to a cancer-related charity. Full details inside.

The Great Adventure

by Barry Allan

Following from my earlier book 'Black Sheep and Gold Diggers' this book tells the story of three of Elizabeth Vurlow’s sons George, Joe and Dave, who served in the AIF during World War One.
Joe joined first and went to Gallipoli where less than a day after arriving he fought in the battle of Lone Pine. From there he went to the Western Front and fought in nearly every major AIF battle until his luck ran out just before the war finished. Dave, the youngest, lied about his age and was second to join. He had many adventures, some of them in VD hospitals. George the eldest brother was married and was last to join. By the time he returned to Australia his life was changed forever.
The story includes descriptions of fighting in major battles seen from the boys' close-up and personal viewpoint, and the effects on their families after the war.

Marconi: His life with images

by Barbara Valotti

Marconi travelled across the Atlantic more than eighty times, he made two world tours and visited dozens of countries, but what he did above all was to connect far distant places by his wireless systems of communication.
At twenty Marconi settled in London, at forty-five he chose to live on a yacht, and at fifty-three he settled in Rome. Yet, he never forgot his roots or the places where his invention took shape: Bologna and the Porrettana, Pontecchio and Villa Griffone.
When he was awarded the Nobel Prize at the age of thirty-five, he was already one of the most famous men in the world. Marconi’s biography is rich in drama and detail. In this reference guide we provide a brief chronology of his life in text and image, which invites you, the reader, to get closer to Marconi and his human and scientific adventures.

Crosscultural Doctoring. On and Off the beaten Path

by William LeMaire

In Cross Cultural Doctoring you will read about my career as a successful obstetrician and gynecologist in academic medicine at a major university.
You will read why I decided at age 55 to leave my position, jump into the unknown and get off the beaten path. I will relate how my wife, Anne, and I accomplished this and how I kept working for various lengths of time in a number of different cultural settings around the world and how we traveled extensively between assignments.
The book is written as a series of loosely connected anecdotes, some medical, some non-medical. Some are funny and some are not so funny. When appropriate, I have added some reflections about our experiences.
I try to convey to the reader the excitement we have felt about our adventures. I hope that the book will inspire readers, medical and non-medical, to consider at some point of their careers to take the step to get off the beaten path. Anne and I certainly have never regretted our choices and have never looked back. Reading this book might also inspire people with similar experiences than ours, to write and publish their story.
One of the highlights of my medical work abroad has been the four months I volunteered at a small Catholic Hospital in Chiapas Mexico. The nuns there did an incredible job running the hospital for the impoverished Mayan population under difficult circumstances. They need all the help they can get. Thus I have decided to make this book available for free and suggest to the reader that they consider making a donation to San Carlos Hospital in Chiapas, in lieu of the customary downloading fee.

A Soldier’s Tale: Albert Money at the Battle of Aubers Ridge, May, 1915

by David Tuffley

I present this first hand account by my maternal grandfather, Private Albert Money , of the King’s Royal Rifles. The cover photo was taken November 1917 after spending several hospitalised years in France, Britain, and Australia, recuperating from his wounds, hence the Australian, not British Army uniform.
Albert was born around 1885, a younger son of a Northamptonshire farming family in England. With no prospects of inheriting the farm, Albert joined the King’s Royal Rifles Corps around 1905 when he was still a boy of 16. Thus he became a professional peace-time soldier in a Regiment known for its overseas activities. The King’s Royal Rifles had been raised in the American colonies in 1756 as the 62nd Regiment. Their reason to exist was to defend the British colonies against French incursions.
Much of his five years service was in the Americas. It is said that he became a good swimmer while stationed in the West Indies, what would now be called the Caribbean. Albert left the Army around 1910 and emigrated to Australia, becoming a bridge carpenter in the employ of Queensland Rail at a time when new train lines were being built throughout the State.
When the First World War started in 1914, the British Army launched a recruitment drive. Experienced soldiers like Albert were encouraged to re-enlist. So he answered the patriotic call and returned to England, becoming Private Albert Money KRR once again. He was about 25. At this time, it is unlikely that he or his comrades had any real concept of the horrors that awaited.

From a 3-bedroom ranch to two condos to a log cabin--in the Smoky Mountains--with black bears as visitors.

Our friend read it and without asking, emailed it off. Two days later Ron got a phone call asking him to come interview for a job. What a surprise!
After 24 years in the same job, Ron changed jobs two times those 12 months.

Status Updates: 2009-2011

by Sean Boling

From the Introduction: "The process of constructing this was enlightening: turns out the updates were never really swept away . They were always there, from day one of opening my facebook account, which is probably a good thing for all of us to keep in mind. Just keep hitting the “older posts” command at the bottom of the page as you scroll down, and eventually you reach the origins of your facebook life. If we could just conduct a similar process for life on earth, we’d solve the mystery of how life began. But as far as an individual life is concerned, mysteries will always abound regarding purpose and conduct: What am I doing here? And am I doing it well?
It is this common thread of wonder and concern which leads me to hope that maybe, just maybe, you’ll manage to find something worthwhile in this small book other than a few laughs, and no additional charge to your credit or debit card, as I imagine many of the things I find myself wondering about or concerned with are of a like mind with you."

Harry's Games, Wit and Wisdom

by John Crace

A FREE extended extract from the forthcoming biography of Harry Redknapp, including the Wit & Wisdom of the greatest football manager England never had . Who is Harry Redknapp? Football genius or football chancer? Master tactician or practical joker? How is it that even when he was facing court proceedings for tax evasion so many people were still seriously tipping him to be the next England manager? How can one man have two such diametrically opposed and incompatible career trajectories? Does the longing to have an English manager in charge of the national side warp people's thinking?' To Portsmouth fans, Redknapp was the man who walked on water and won them an FA Cup. To Southampton fans, he is still the devil incarnate who had them relegated before jumping ship to their arch rivals. Spurs fans weren't sure what he was, bit didn't care as long as he kept the team together and winning. Sometimes he's the Messiah, at others the clown. Whoever he is, Crace is determined to find out.

The 1950's: A Time To Grow

by Jon Peasey

The 1950's ushered in a tremendous time of change as Australia emerged from the post World War 2 years and began rebuilding for the future. As the decade rolled on, outer western Sydney gradually changed from its rural setting and steadily became urbanised. Some very early recollections of my childhood and then a description of my home town Smithfield sets the mood for the rich variety of events that unfold; as I grew from early childhood into my teenage years.
'The 1950's - A Time To Grow' is based on recollections of incidents in my life; growing up in Smithfield, in what was then a rural area in outer western Sydney, Australia. The Smithfield of today is vastly different to the Smithfield of the 1950's.
All the events depicted in these memoirs certainly added spice and variety to my childhood; such things as: as playing in the bush, our pets, the bad condition of roads in the area and growing our own vegetables. Other activities included going to Sunday School on a bus, picking blackberries and mushrooms, swimming in a local dam and building a fort in the bush. Then there were scouting days as a Boy Scout, driving my friend’s micro midget speedcar and being present at a cave in. Come along with me and enjoy the journey.

Just A Misdemeanor Or Two

by LaVall McIvor

This memoir covers 11 years of my life between the ages of 13 and 23. During my teenage years I was an out of control juvenile delinquent with little supervision, living in my little protected community in Southern Oregon. I had no regard for anyone except myself, uncaring of others feelings. When I graduated high school it was like a slap in the face when I had the draft facing me.

Storm

by Stephanie Frerk

The story of Storm is the true story of a journey of shattered dreams and empty relationships to the victory of a new dawn and new beginnings. It is the story of a child whose life was destroyed by the very people she loved and trusted. This story is first and foremost about overcoming adversary. Facing death on a few occasions, Storm walked where angels feared to tread in the true sense of the word and by GOD's grace has lived to tell the tale. Sometimes bad things do happen to good and innocent people...it's what you do with what happens to you, that makes the difference... Storm's life journey may be tragic, but out of tragedy and adversary, a compassionate, giving person was formed. It is above all a story of triumph and validation of what God can accomplish if you allow Him to use what you have lived to His glory.

Memoirs Of a Manic

by Jon Van Loon

Despite being Bipolar and having a severe Learning Disability I earned a PhD in Environmental Chemistry and became a Full Professor at The University of Toronto. This book, Memoirs of a Manic, consists of 61 mainly humorous short stories related to events that occurred during my improbably successful career which includes publication of 6 research oriented Books by major Science Publishers and 120 peer reviewed research papers.
These are non technical and in large part amusing tales that unfolded through experiences relating to events at the University of Toronto and as a Consultant for organizations such as PACE, The Ontario Ministry of the Environment, UNESCO and the World Bank. Many occurred while living, teaching and working for short periods in a variety of jurisdictions on 6 Continents.
I had no intention of writing this material down in any form until I gave in to the insistence that I do so by colleagues, friends and acquaintances. They supposed that wider dispersal of this material was warranted and would prove notably entertaining to the general public.
It’s difficult to find much humor in the news of the day. Thus I propose that many chronicles in this collection of short stories may provide a view of the lighter side here and there in our earthly environment. Even the few that carry a more serious perspective are written in a manner that suggests hope for worldly problems.
The brevity of these narratives should be appealing. Being able to read something of worth and of good humor now and then during a break in the work day should also be entreating.

When Real Life Begins

by Karen Sunde

Martin Denton, founder of NYTheatre.com made this play his “Top Recommendation of the Week,” saying:
“When Real Life Begins is an extraordinary solo play about passion, love, and theatre. … a single, long, breathless strand of stream-of-consciousness, moving backward and forward through time and in and out of Anne’s mind and memory.
“There are two stories in When Real Life Begins, inextricably linked but oppositely arced. One is tragic: the death…from cancer of Sam, an actor and artistic director of a small off-off Broadway company…recounted by Anne, his widow and partner, a woman whose sorrow and loss are finally profound and unknowable. At the same time, though, Anne finds herself blossoming as a theatrical producer, assuming the reins from – and carrying the torch for – her beloved Sam. Her discovery, within herself, of a passionate, artistic visionary, is startling and uplifting. Anne’s journeys – the one characterized by…bouts with despair and exhaustion; the other by the sheer joy of creation and accomplishment – form a moving and resonate counterpoint, and make When Real Life Begins a very special play indeed. packs an undeniable wallop. This is a play you won’t soon forget."

Rumor Has It: A 2000 Year Brainstorm 2007-2009

by Mike Hicks

In this first installment I begin postulating the idea of a brain-centered universe. If you think of creation as a design by God, you have to consider the logistics behind it. One is his motive which likely is curiosity. From there one could suggest the most efficient design would center on the most complicated facet of our existence, the human brain.
I suggest sometime around the Kennedy assassination the Intelligence community seized power of the government, and military. Which is more likely to you? A bullet that defies physics or a well orchestrated coup d’etat. I was told on my father’s death bed that he never progressed past Major in the Air Force, “because he wouldn’t do something illegal” by my mother. He also had told me he knew members of the Warren Commission. Seinfeld has an infatuation with the Kennedys I believe because they know the Russians know who orchestrated Kennedy's death. Or maybe I took the most direct route.
Towards the end of this book I notice my name is Mike Hicks, or My Kicks. As though writing this is what God does for kicks.
In this installment I write the poem, A miscommunication of eternal premeditation, or are you just fucking with me? One of my more thought-provoking posts if I may say so myself.
I also go through the first 50 Seinfeld episodes illustrating the similarities to me and this role I am in. I am suggesting they intentionally signed me up to be in the Superman role saying the things I have to say.
Plus I go into the physics behind global warming and how gravity holds all of the heat generated by mankind to the Earth. And there is no turning back from convection if I am correct. By an estimate in 2012 around 10-20% of global warming is due to our power consumption and the heat generated by it.
I also need to add I talk shit to the FBI monitoring my computer the whole time I write it.
Eric: You know I think this whole thing is cooked. I think he keeps shooting his mouth off about the Bureau and nobody knows what to do with him so we tag him as a deviant and run him out of the building. Its bullshit. The whole thing is Kenneth Star all over again except I am running around looking for the blue dress.

Not at home and away

by J.M. Harper

This story is not just a story of love; it’s a story about abandonment and indifference in the end. This is a story about how someone can build an illusion and after some time, wake someone up and this person is realizing that all what happened in another country, in another continent for love very far away from home was almost like a dream without possibility to find footsteps in the back in order to understand questions or to find reasons for the present situation, especially for the one who decided to travel to reach each other.
It feels like being alone suddenly and literally in a forest full of memories inside, full of pictures, full of stuff collected about that trip, where to put all that? Is a big question that the author is trying to figure out in order to move on, but love it’s precisely a solid rock that can be broken, yes it is, but it’s heavy like a stone of tons of kilograms specially when the stone was built with pure love, sometimes is impossible to remove it with a simple movement or effort, it’s not possible to say like an order – Ok, now you move on, and you got to continue- no, the rock can be transformed into a ghost, chasing the man, and the very soul of the man anywhere, anytime, anywhere; therefore is imperative a solution for the author, a path to continue.
The allegory of a rock as a symbol of love is here because is really powerful for what he want to express here, and to say it without to be naïve from the side of the author or unfair with the one who is mentioned here, because it’s necessary to be objective too, and fair enough with all the events that I’m going to tell in this story. Although I'll be as honest as I can. If I have to find words at random to create a meaning for all this words in this book, I would say: love, attention, appreciation, doubtfulness, insecurity, cruelty, indifference, as it follows each one of them, a relationship has ups and down, but when we are feeling something different we talk, otherwise we continue supporting the one you suppose to love. Maybe I could find more words but I would think that you, the reader, are going to be able to find them, as an afterthought while you are reading this story. And that will be my success. I don’t pretend anything ambitious in this book, just to tell my story. In fact, I’m my own editor, publisher, and author.

Cancer: A Message Of Hope

by Jairo Alvarez

Dear Friend:
Re: "Let's Save Six"
I believe that we are put on this earth to help each other and to pass on to the next generations the lessons we have learned. Of the things that surprised me most in recent years through the presentation to thousands of people of my autobiography, "No Such Thing as Impossible" is the scourge that is causing to the humanity, without distinction or country, race or age a "silent killer", the prostate cancer. No man should die of prostate cancer if it is detected on time and the right action is taken.
I am a six years prostate cancer survivor and the lessons I learned throughout my treatment and recovery need to be passed on....why? In the time it takes you to have dinner six men will die in USA needlessly from this silent killer and twenty eight are going to be diagnosed with the disease. YES... SIX MEN WILL DIE. Grandfathers, husbands, brothers, sons, relatives and friends. With this in mind I have embarked on a campaign that with your help we will save the lives of many men.
This week I published my book "CANCER—A Message of Hope, also in Spanish - CÁNCER -- Un Mensaje de Esperanza - is very informative and will certainly provide inspiration to overcome prostate cancer and discover a "newlife". This book encourages men with prostate cancer to face their diagnosis and treatment options. It helps families understand what their loved one will face as he battles this cancer and teaches family members how to help. Perhaps most importantly, this book can create a much needed awareness of this disease, while dispelling the myths that surround it.
The proceeds of "CANCER - A Message of Hope -- is destined to The USA Prostate Cancer Foundation. I am asking you to help me eradicate this heartbreaking statistic. How you can help me with the campaign "Let's Save Six". You can Save Six and thousands of lives more by:
· Buying books to distribute to your family and friends.
· Ask your family and friends to do the same.

Keiko-san's Story: An Account of the Minamata Tragedy

by Eustacia Tan

Four years ago, I came back from Japan full of ideas. But due to my short-term memory and general inertia, most ideas fizzled out, save one - to type out Keiko-san's story. Let's have a little flashback: at the time of the trip, most of us were concerned mainly with anime, JPop and the typical teenage stuff. But we grew serious at times. Once at the Nagasaki Peace Memorial, and the other, at the Minamata Disease Municipal Museum.
When I got back, I was full of starry, albeit vague, ambitions about making a difference in the lives of the sufferers. But the most I got was to circulate the story I typed/transcribed among our small group. Nothing concrete came out of it.
But now, four years later, thanks to the power of Smashwords, I managed to get the story out. Yup, the story is basically what I heard those years ago, transcribed onto the computer and now, out in the internet. And since I played no part in this story, this is naturally free. You're reading the book now.

The Woman who Rewrote History

by Claire Lloyd

Luisa Isabel María del Carmen Cristina Rosalía Joaquina Álvarez de Toledo y Maura, Isabel to her friends, was the 21st Duchess of Medina-Sidonia, one of the oldest aristocratic families in Spain. She became known as the Red Duchess because of her political convictions, for which she was imprisoned under the Franco regime. A prolific writer and a controversial historian, she inherited one of the largest private historical archives in Europe, and dedicated her life to its organisation and preservation. Controversial to the end, on her deathbed she married her female companion and secretary to ensure that the archive would remain intact in the ducal palace at Sanlúcar de Barrameda and not be divided amongst her children.
Isabel was the product of generations of aristocrats, politicians, historians, warriors and controversial figures. Despite her strong belief in social justice she never renounced her titles, and is it intriguing to ponder what she saw as the role of the nobility in contemporary Spain, and where she saw herself within that structure. Certainly her titles protected her from almost certain execution following her outspoken criticism of Franco, but she retained them long after his death. How did she resolve the apparent contradiction of passing on the line of Spain's oldest dukedom with her professed Republicanism? Was her devotion to history and her family's place in it stronger than her political conscience? Did she believe in noblesse oblige, the responsibility of the privileged to the less fortunate?
Published accounts of Isabel's life tend to be either sycophantic or deeply critical, depending on the standpoint of the writer. However it became clear to me while reading them that she was neither saint nor sinner, but the product of her unique circumstances. My principle aim in writing this book, therefore, is to paint a more objective picture. Apart from obituaries there is very little written about her in English, so my secondary aim is to bring this fascinating woman to the attention of a wider readership.

Steal This Hero: An Abbie Hoffman Love Song In Two Verses, One Chorus and a Coda

by Jack Preston King

A funny and deeply moving memoir of the author's finding Abbie Hoffman's "Steal This Book" while a pre-teen growing up in a Midwest small town at the end of the Nixon era, and of his disappointing "coming of age" as a full-fledged Abbie-loving cultural revolutionary "Yippie" during a '70s-'80s that had long ago traded "The Revolution" for the hedonistic, "Shut up and dance!" ethic of Disco-mania.
[Begin Excerpt]
"Mom," I boldly offered one evening, "Listen to what they're saying over there. They're right. America is the Great Satan. We've trashed the Third World for two hundred years. It's about time they trashed us back."
Stunned silence. Burning cheeks.
"Jesus, Mom," I continued. "Just look at the situation over there." I was rolling now, no time to think. I'd shocked my way onto center stage and I meant to score some points, however wildly naive' or inaccurate my historical perspective. "They're starving over there because we've got all the food. They pump that oil because we've got all the cars. They..."
I petered out. Mom's move.
"I can't believe you," she said, her voice more controlled than I'd expected, than I'd hoped. "You sound like a Communist. You sound like that Abbie Hoffman."
Really?, I thought. Like Abbie Hoffman? The guy too dangerous to read? I remind you of him?
I was deflected. My mental wheels were spinning and I could give no verbal response. Mom took it as a victory and turned back to the television. I took it as a victory, too, and turned to making plans.
"It is perhaps fitting that I write this introduction in jail – that graduate school of survival. Here you learn to use toothpaste as glue, fashion a shiv out of a spoon and build intricate communication networks. Here too, you learn the only rehabilitation possible – hatred of oppression." – Abbie Hoffman, Steal This Book
I had to know more about this Abbie Hoffman. By comparing me to Abbie, Mom had meant to insult me, to label me a full-fledged traitorous anarcho-Communist freak, a social aberration. For me, though, with no real information beyond the memory of the book incident years before, what she'd done was promote me to the status of Power Object. She'd handed me the keys to full membership in the Great Subversive WE.
If I was to accept that membership, I reasoned, I'd better find out exactly who WE are...
I stole the book…

Coming Together

by Sky TwoRivers

Coming together is a memoire of my healing journey, filled with my stories and life lessons. I am so grateful for the stories of others that helped me find the light and truly hope to give a little back so that maybe my story makes an impact in your life. I have been working on this book for years and I have put my heart and soul into this project with the intention of making a difference in the world.
The story is pieced together through my personal diaries where I offer advice on healing and openly discuss the issues that I faced. I grow with the evolution of my true story, and as it comes together, we come together. It will bring tears to your eyes, laughter to your lips and love to your heart. Join me as I lead you through my personal spiritual journey to an honest healing of my heart; through my decent into abandonment, abuse, death, drugs and deep sadness, followed by my ascension into healing.
I am sharing my words and love in order to help light your own journey. My intention while writing this book is to help you find your own questions and seek your own answers for healing. We are each other’s beacons of light and love. We are students and teachers to one another and we move between both roles throughout our entire lives.
It is important to break the chains of pain that many of us live with. Pains that have been passed down from our parents and from their parents. We carry these chains without healing or acknowledging what’s holding us back from truly being happy. We heal by acknowledging the traumas within our own lives. Our ancestors play a very important role, having a healthy you generates a healthy future for our children.
I would like to give a very special thanks to Layla Bartole and David Lefort for the time and dedication they contributed to helping me bring this project into completion. It has been a real gift. The birthing of this book was way more of a challenging than I ever anticipated and having the support and encouragement has been wonderful and greatly needed. Thank-you, thank-you!
I dedicate this book to my beloved twin brother Matthew who helped me grow in more ways than I ever imagined. Thank-you for the teachings and unconditional love.

Juan-les-Pins Whitechapel Paris

by Margaret Turner

This book is free until summer 2013. If there’s one place and time that marks the beginning of the modern Riviera summer holiday, it is Juan les Pins, on the Cote d’Azur, in the 1930s. This is where sunbathing and waterskiing were invented, where beach, sea and sun came together to create the archetypal Mediterranean summer. To grow up as an English girl – at home in two cultures – in the centre of this beautiful and extraordinary place, at such a dramatic time, made for a fascinating and unusual childhood. Shattered suddenly by evacuation to England in 1940, to work as a nurse in the London Hospital in Whitechapel during the war. Then a return to France, and the British Embassy in Paris, with all the privations, challenges and opportunities of the post-war years. This autobiography takes us from 1928 to 1950, from the age of six to the age of 28. At times a gentle description of a vanished way of life; at others a chronicle of a rich family life; with some moments of intense drama, and others of lyrical description.

Brief Encounters with Real Life

by Jon Van Loon

Like most 0.9 billion citizens in developed countries I thought I was living the “real life”. A variety of circumstances detailed herein proved that this was not so. As an environmental sciences researcher at the University of Toronto and a consultant living and working worldwide it became clearly evident that the “real life” belongs to our 6 billion co-inhabitants elsewhere. This monograph provides brief often amusing and emotive, glimpses into the reality we seldom yet see. The book is structured by country and begins with surprising past, local incidents. China, South Africa and Brazil are among the several counties glimpsed from abroad.
