Poems From Another Time

by Nemonica Bars

The art of poetry...
"It starts with a vision
A simple thought
And we put onto paper
The things we have sought
We draw out our pains, our thoughts and our fears
But also, some happiness behind all our tears
So go ahead, bleed out in ink as you cry
But you won't be forgotten
For artists never die."

The Remaining Difficulty

by Cesar Nascimento

The poems in this book deal with some of the everlasting questions that we all have to face, and they may seem bleak and gloomy to some readers. What are we doing here? What purpose can we find for our lives. Is there any higher meaning that we can understand or is it just the here and now? I won't give you answers, for I have none. Read it thinking about Baudelaire, and forget about Mary Oliver.

Bread of Tears

by Fowlpox Press

My first clue into Rounds’ motivations came with some research into the title. The phrase “bread of tears” is taken from Psalm 80. The verses around it say the following:
How long, Lord God Almighty, will your anger smolder against the prayers of your people? You have fed them with the bread of tears; you have made them drink tears by the bowlful. You have made us an object of derision to our neighbors, and our enemies mock us.
It was then that I began to understand the subjects of Rounds’ poetry. They are not the subjects of love, objects of affection, or esteemed champions of victory that are the subjects of so many poems before. They are not even the hard-working, salt of the earth people whose praises are sung throughout the verses of Whitman and others like him. In a way, they are not subjects of anything. They are people so defeated by life that they are never mentioned at all.--Patrick Stevens

The Christmas Challenge

by Linda Boltman

Trying to recreate a family tradition when my Grandpa Shorty took me with him to cut down and carry home the family Christmas tree, proved more difficult than I thought. Each year my children and I would traipse out to our local tree farm to pick out our Christmas tree, deck it with ribbons and bows as identifiers, then come back to cut it down in time for Christmas. Each year our Christmas tree got taller and wider. Our family tradition culminated in the Christmas my friends and family still refer to as the year of the “Mother Lode Tree”.

Cut Flowers

by Sean Boling

Stanford and Dodge are both looking for redemption, each having arrived at their current purgatory via extremely different paths: Stanford from the top-down, and Dodge from the bottom-up. Dodge wasted the greater part of his adult life in a drug-induced stupor, consequently neglecting the family he started when he was much younger. Stanford wasted an upscale career in business thanks to his hubris, which led to a horrific tragedy. Told from Stanford’s point of view, the story unfolds in the rugged coastal region of California stretching from Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz, where the two men are working for a flower grower, Joe Mirabelli. Only half an hour away from cemented civilization, the community’s atmosphere seems more like the edge of the world, residing on a narrow stretch of land locked in by the Pacific on one side, and the mountains separating it from the well-lighted Bay Area on the other side. It is here, working on the ranch, that the unlikely co-workers search for a way back to self-respect. Dodge has lived in the area all his life, while Stanford is an anomaly to the local residents: a visitor from “over the hill” who decided to stay. Though Stanford and Dodge do not have much to do with each other for the first several months of Stanford’s employment at Mirabelli Nurseries, they form a close bond following Stanford’s intervention in an attack on Dodge by a drug-crazed man who jogs into the ranch from Highway One. As their mutual respect grows, so do their suspicions that the event concerning the overdosed man points to a larger problem infecting the enchanted area. A series of circumstances lead them to believe that a nearby broken-down ranch is doubling as a crystal meth factory, manufacturing the drug for street distribution through the San Francisco wholesale flower market. As simple as it may be to report their suspicions to the proper authorities, the men instead latch onto the investigation as a way to prove themselves to each other, and to those whom they have let down, lost, or ruined during the course of their lives leading up to this point. However, just as their previous lives’ pursuits were marked by tragic consequences, their amateur sleuthing careens toward a conclusion even more out of control than the past events they are trying to overcome.

When Margaret signed on as Mrs. Gabbler's personal assistant, she didn't think her job included zoo-keeping. But, as sole caretaker of her mistress's rare, pink Iguana, Duchess...every day for her is a safari. And a battle for her life.
On the surface, Duchess is nothing more than a spoiled, pampered pet. And yet, underneath the iguana's lazy veneer, Margaret senses something older, something sinister...something out for blood. Margaret's blood...

Strange Fruit: Prologue

by Raegan Millhollin

Strange Fruit: Prologue is five shorts that set the stage for a story about fallen angels, malicious demons, and the humans stuck in the middle.
The Fates know the world is more than what it seems; the supernatural: vampires, witches, werewolves, and the things that lurk in the dark, have for centuries woven themselves into the fabric of all that is Normal. But that is changing. Three teenagers, who can see the future, know something is coming, that a power is gathering in their quiet city of Starfield, and not even they can predict what that means.
When Ephraim, a young man who is violently protective of his twin brother, and just a little bit crazy, finds an angel missing a wing collapsed in an alleyway, his act of kindness sets off a chain of events that endangers everything he loves, and may bring about the Apocalypse.
