I am delighted with this new review for ROCK HARD

:
DANNY DELIGHTS: Danny Lancaster’s latest appearance is more brutal and complex than his previous outings as he finds his loyalty tested to the limit when he heads to Gibraltar to help one of the comrades who saved his life in Afghanistan.
The soldier turned private eye is out of his comfort zone, away from his support network, and a pawn of forces with disparate agendas and more clouded morals than our straightforward, do-the-right-thing hero.
He's got some serious love interest too, while he battles the baddies in fine style, his cunning, quick-thinking reactions helping him stay alive and - just about - on the case.
As the body count rises we also discover that sometimes one leg is better than two and, as the action builds to a pulsating climax away from the beautifully-recreated micro-world of the British Rock, author Bill Todd leaves us all wondering...

I am so thrilled with this new 5* review for ROCK HARD

KoboBarnes & Noble
:
“Having read the three previous Danny Lancaster action-packed thrillers and enjoyed them all immensely, there is always an element of fear that another instalment might be disappointing. No worries on this score - this lived up to and exceeded expectations. Yet again the writing and descriptions immerse you from the first page and could not put this down. A gripping, thrilling, entertaining and violent trip to Gibraltar for my hero, Danny, with an exploding climax that leaves you wondering. The descriptive writing about Gibraltar makes you feel you actually know the area even if you have not been there. Always difficult to write a review for this type of book without giving anything away. I would recommend to anyone, not just to those who read this genre, as it has a lot more to offer besides. Loved it!”

The importance of the opening paragraph came up in conversation. I've never lined mine up in a row so I had a go. Here they are:

“He’d been surprised at the sound his father’s skull made when he split it with the axe. He wasn’t sure what he expected, maybe something wet, squashy. There wasn’t much mess, at least not until he yanked out the blade.”

“EDDIE Shapiro was obsessed with Cindy-Sue. She indulged his fantasies. She took him to the heights. Eddie had been with more women than he could remember. But Cindy-Sue was the real love of his life.”

“Time to say goodbye to our passenger,” said De Ruyter. And Steele felt sick again. He unclipped his safety harness and pulled himself to his feet, bracing against the juddering of the aircraft in the rising air currents."

“The heat was murder but that wasn’t the worst of it. There were the bodies. They’d seen them from the road, knew what had happened. They knew it was pointless but had to check, had to cover themselves.”

ROCK HARD

KoboBarnes & Noble
is a crime thriller but it's not all guns and villains. Here is an extract:

She tiptoed across the room and picked up the dress and bra, looking around. Where were the rest of her clothes?
“You going?”
She jerked upright, startled, dropped the bra, picked it up again.
“Ah... yes... I’ve got... things to do.”
“I’d like to see you again.”
“Look, I don’t usually...”
“Me neither. But we got on really well last night. I thought...”
He gestured toward the bedboard behind him.
“Look, I’m not the kind of guy who carves notches. You seemed really nice and I thought...”
“I...”
He held up his hands, palms out.
“Look, no pressure. I’m Paul.”
She smiled with a clown mouth smeared with the last of her red lipstick.
“Just think about it. Leave me your number. I’ll call you.”
She opened her mouth to speak but had no words, blinked, gave a little nod, walked out. Brain spinning thoughts faster than she could cope, she walked into the hall, wondering where the rest of her things were.
Her knickers lay twisted on the carpet just inside the front door of the flat. Her tiny evening bag was nearby.
Another flash of memory, kissing him... Paul... in the back of a minicab. She saw her shoes, those ridiculous uncomfortable heels, by the wall opposite the front door.
Another flash. Climbed the stairs. Laughing. Him... Paul... picking her up as they stepped inside. Kissing. Shoes falling. Paul wrapping her around him. Her back to the wall, head banging against it.
Emma realised she had stopped breathing as the memory reran again and again. She wondered if she’d been drugged, almost wished, knew it wasn’t true. He seemed like a really nice guy. Somehow that made it worse.

To wet your appetite, here's another extract from my crime thriller ROCK HARD

Find On:

KoboBarnes & Noble
:

To die for food was a good thing, an excellent thing. Human lives ended for many trivial reasons, greed, envy, stupidity, even love. But to face death in the cause of superb cuisine was noble.
Ignorant people regarded food as simply a means to sustain life. But those who understood knew that it was one of life’s greatest pleasures, equal to sex, sometimes better.
He did not know if men had died for his dinner this evening. He hoped so. It could only enhance that unique flavour of the sea, a taste of granite, of sealife, crashing waves, of drowned men.
These heroic men hung from the tall sharp rocks on a single strand of rope, cutting their quarry from the mineral-rich granite with a knife as the foaming Atlantic waves crashed around them.
Their work was determined by the lunar cycle, a low ebb at the full or new moon. The percebes that lived close to the surface were no good, contaminated by sun and wind. Only those that were deeper, feeding on the riches of the ocean, only they were the real prize.
He picked up the first barnacle, admired the shiny head with its red lips shining wet. He slit its snakeskin shaft between the stalk and hoof with a thumbnail. As he pinched off the sleeve a squirt of rich briny juice jetted onto his shirt. He smiled as he slid the glistening shaft of flesh between his lips.
Pleasure had to be taken seriously. And after, he had business to transact.

. This sort of response really is the marzipan and the icing on top of all that lonely typing:
“I have read all 4 of the Danny investigations now and loved every minute. Bill Todd never fails to keep me excited and gripped with his fantastic descriptions and details.
“Living in Brighton, I always enjoy being captivated by the scenes set. On his latest adventure, Danny finds himself in Gibraltar, helping out an old friend in deep trouble, and the scenes are again beautifully descriptive. This series of books has something for everyone, action packed, page turning drama, sex, violence and shock twists and turns. I fall for Danny’s character more and more with every instalment.”
