Spammers

Apologies if your viewing pleasure has been disrupted by the large number of spam messages on the forums earlier this afternoon. Somebody, now banned, thought that they could gain "Google Juice" by linking to their site from every thread on Nobooko. My phone gets pinged each time a new message is posted so I can normally spot and remove any dodgy messages relatively quickly.

The spammers think that by adding lots of links to their own site from a reputable site that it will increase their page ranking in Google's search results. In fact Google are quite good at spotting this behaviour and ranking sites lower because of it. I checked the reputation of the site involved in this outbreak - and it was already not very good, despite the site only being 46 days old.

This problem occurs from time to time. If you see messages that make no sense or are out of context do not follow the links as they often lead to malware. And even if they don't then you are encouraging the spammer's behaviour.

If you see a dodgy message has been on the site more than 24 hours then please send me a private message - I may have missed it. Thanks!

Please drop me a line if you notice a flood of spam and I can try to stop it at the server end if it is persistant. I do keep an eye on things here, but aren't able to look in as much as I'd like.

Did you try setting it to Wumbo?

Looks like the spammers may be back in the next few days. At the beginning of January I realised how to spot spammer accounts before they could make their first post. Since then the "pre-crime" algorithm has been quite successful in banning the accounts before they could junk up the forum with dubious links.

However the spammers appear to have changed their strategy this morning and I may not be able to spot their robots until they post. I get notified of each post as its made and will delete junk posts directly I get the opportunity - typically within a few hours.

I've been reporting spam when I see it here. If that helps, I'll continue to do so.

Thanks! Yes, it does help as it pulls the messages out of the stream earlier than I can get to them - and the longer the messages are visible, the more likely they get benefit from a Search engine seeing them.
