I used Lifehacker instructions for rooting using TouchNooter.
Seemed OK, but after rebooting "Your Nook is starting up..." screen is permanently on.
Cannot power down.
Be most grateful for any help

Hi jinjamiki.

Have you tried a simple reset of your Nook? Press and hold the on'off button for 20 seconds.
Hope that helps? From a brand new user...[/align]

Thanks Bill. for your reply (the only one).
I have tried that, but no joy.
I've just about given up!

Have you got the newer firmware (1.2.1)? You need to use a different rooting method if this is the case.

Just written a blog post on the subject:

i had a similar problem the other day after recharging it locked up so i tried recharging it ,the battery had for some reason discharged itself. So i plugged it in to recharging and and the restarting screen came up with the battery charge needed. So i recharged and so far it works again.
